SPASTICITY SUMMIT 2014

On November 13, 2005, some 9 years ago, we organised with the newly-founded Philippine Society of Neurorehabilitation (or PSNR) what became the first - and largest Spasticity Summit held in the country. The PSNR is the very first component society in Asia recognised by the prestigious World Federation of NeuroRehabilitation (WFNR).
Over 500 participants composed mainly of cerebral palsied children and individuals, stroke survivors, persons with spinal cord and brain injuries, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, caregivers, parents and spouses and physicians with a special interest in neurorehabilitation, filled the Tejeros Hall at the AFP Commissioned Officers Club at Camp Aguinaldo to listen, be updated on the latest techniques on how to improve the quality of life of people suffering from spasticity and actively share their personal experiences as regards the condition.
Spasticity is a condition where muscles involuntary contract or are in a continuous state of stiffness and rigidity. In many cases there is pain. It is usually caused by certain injuries to specific parts of the brain, which may be precipitated by various possible events such as a stroke (or brain attack), physical injury to the brain or spinal cord due to accidents - or in the case of cerebral palsy - several possible things like deprivation of oxygen, injury to the brain before birth and in a small number of cases, after birth (for example, an infection triggered meningitis).
Individuals with this condition find it very difficult to function normally. Simple tasks we take for granted like walking, eating, brushing one's teeth, going to the bathroom, washing hands or holding things require enormous effort - and the impact on their emotional well-being is enormous.
The aim of neurorehabilitation is to improve the functional and emotional capacities of these people with the aim of uplifting their own overall quality of life, so that they may become or continue to be valuable members of society. Along the same vein - members of the immediate circle of these same individuals with spasticity - their parents, spouses, siblings, friends and carers may also be able to enjoy a better outlook despite the challenges of having a member of the family with spasticity.
YOU ARE INVITED.
On the afternoon of Sunday, November 30, 2014 at the Rizal High School Alumni Hall in Pasig City (beginning at 1 pm), we invite everyone to participate in a meaningful project that would surely bring a profound impact on the lives of our fellow men suffering from this condition as we hold the 2014 SPASTICITY SUMMIT: Delivering Hope for Some of Life's More Serious Complications.

For more information on how to participate, you may send an email to info@auspicia.ph or call 904-3594 (PSNR Executive Director) or text 09.20.97.98.99.1.
